πŸ”₯They’re Hooping & They Know It πŸ”₯

By: Jadyn Brown

5 seconds left in a heated battle, with the game tied 84-84. With one second left on the clock SHE SHOOTS…….SHE SCORES!!! The Phoenix Mercury win. These are the type of moments that basketball fans are missing everyday as they refuse to respect the WNBA!

The WNBA is very important because of it’s huge impact on women and girls all around the world. ¨People think that some sports are only for guys but people have to realize that some sports are for girls too¨ said Adlih 6th grader at Northwest Middle. More people should know about the WNBA, They are highly talented women. The women in the WNBA are amazing  people on and off court. They do a lot for the people around them and in their communities. During their off seasons they go around the United States and volunteer at food pantries. They also give less fortunate kids brand new sneakers that they love. They do a lot of things for the Boys And Girls Club of America as in play basketball with the kids and do arts and crafts.

The WNBA has a lot of great players that never get recognized for their amazing talents. For instance Breanna Stewart is a WNBA player and has been in the league for 3 years now. In her short career she has made approximately 2019 points. On average each game over her career she makes 20 points that’s more than Klay Thompson over his career at each game. She even won the WNBA’s 2018 MVP. Many people don't know this because they don’t watch the WNBA on TV or even go to a nearby game. The WNBA needs the same support as the NBA and watching it on tv is a major way to support them.

Unlike the NBA the WNBA has had many moments that caused them to think that they might have to shut down. In 2003 there was a big chance there wasn’t going to be a WNBA season. This was because a lot of contracts were not right. The WNBA players weren’t getting health care. Also their contracts were shorter than they wanted. Their contracts were for 3 years instead of 5 like they wanted. The WNBA is losing money as we speak. The WNBA could close any day just because of low views and ticket sells. “I would care if it ended, because women deserve the same thing that men get in the NBA” said Antwan a 6th grader at Northwest Middle. This shows that many people care about the WNBA but won’t do anything to help it.

The WNBA has a bright future ahead of itself with new comers and some of the players that are already there. Personally I would like to join the WNBA in the future and be apart of making it as respected as the NBA. The WNBA has done a lot for the community and the empowerment of women and girls alike.  Will you support the upcoming WNBA season? Comment below.
