Hats or Nah

By: Aliya Byers

Word on the street is that Northwest students aren’t allowed to wear hats in school. This eliminates a huge expression of style that includes a mix of baseball hats, fedora’s, and skullies (snug hats).

The trend of wearing hats started in 3200BC. One of the first pictorial  depictions of a hat appeared in a Thebes tomb. A painting on the wall shows a man wearing a coolie straw hat.  Even ancient civilizations knew how cool hats were.  Hats also are great for keeping your head warm and baseball hats keep the sun out of your eyes. Also, they just look cool and add swag to any outfit. But close-minded adults often feel as if these reasons don’t carry enough weight to make them change the rules.

The downsides of this trend are minor. One downside is that students pull them over their eyes and sleep in class. Another is that teachers think it is unprofessional to wear hats in school.  But I’d say the biggest downside is that students can’t wear them in school.  That’s definitely a downside.

In all honesty though, students should be able to wear hats. I think so because it is a way of expressing ourselves, just like when we wear clothes we like. Art shouldn’t be banned, that’s all hats are, is art that we wear on our heads. If we don’t have to wear uniforms then why can’t we wear hats? Do you think we should be able to wear hats?  Answer in the comments below.

  1. Aliya this is a great article! My thoughts on wearing "Hats or Nah"..... ;-) We are preparing you all for professional jobs and it is not wrong to wear a hat. In fact, people wear them for many different reasons. In a school setting we want to see your face and connect as we communicate and teach our students. For safety purposes we need to be able to identify each student and a hat can block and cover your features....Just a few reasons why hats are not allowed

    1. Ms.Portley, thank you for responding to my article. I understand what you mean about being professional. It's just the fact that most students aren't professional and don't act like they are either. There might be a few but not a whole lot. Also, thanks for complementing my article and sharing your opinion.

  3. Well, this article was outstanding and you should keep the good work up. I agree with the opinion of wearing hats in school but could also be argued for safety reasons. I think it is imperative that we don't wear hats all the time bc something could occur then the instructors wouldn't be able to identify us. We should wear hats and then again not

    1. I totally agree with you. We should, we aren't bothering anyone. But, i'm afraid that just my article and comments won't be enough to change the rule. If we want to do that the school needs to come together as a whole and vote against it. I am also with you on the creativity part. We need to be able to express ourselves. For all we know, a person might just find themselves through creativity.
