Have you ever heard of the SEEDS Conference and showcases? If
you haven’t it’s kind of a big deal.
This year Northwest Middle School sent a group of 8th graders
to represent and they returned with a first place finish in the science competition
that was held at Mid American Nazarene University.
The SEEDS conference and showcase was an event where
Students Engaged in Exploring and Designing Solutions. Our students, Reyna Espino,
Stacy Cruz, Rosa Ortiz, Isela Villalobos, and Jared Ceron had to build a
tabletop experiment and a plane they designed with limited materials. According
to Reyna Espino, “We had to do research on the plane lift and we also had to
use a lot of our prior knowledge”. This showed how students could use new and
old information to find solutions.
The competition included not just the flight competition but
also the tabletop presentation. According to Rosa Ortiz, “We spent a few days
after school researching and preparing.” Each team in this competition had a
different tabletop experiment ours was called the ‘Naked Egg’. ” The naked egg
experiment was an example of Osmosis on animal cells.” Isela said.
The 8th graders were chosen according to their grades,
behavior, and their interest in science. Using their potential and strategies
they won the flight competition and received a Galileo scope. This competition
showed the students interest and dedication towards science and their ability
to solve problems.
The 8th graders showed dedication, good behavior
and interest in science too gain the honor of being a participating team. Both
the tabletop experiment and the flight competition showed how their intellect
stood above the other schools. Our 8th graders this year gave it
their best effort and won first place. Do you think you have what it takes to keep
this going next year?
